The Magic Question

There's magic in the question:  "How Can I…?"

Think about it.  When you ask yourself, "How Can I…?" you automatically engage your brain in doing what it's really good at: solving problems.  You start focusing on solutions, you do not waste any time dwelling on problems and obstacles, and you continue forward progress.

Let's look at two scenarios.  Assume you've been working very hard at your business, resolving lots of issues, overcoming a myriad of obstacles and getting aligned with your goals.  Then, you encounter yet another rather large obstacle.

The first reaction:

"Why ME?  Why can't I ever seem to get ahead?  Why do I always have problems?"

The second reaction:

"Ok, how can I best resolve this? How can I most effectively work around this?"

I'm sure you see the difference.  In the first you've already thrown in the towel, you've shut down, you're defeated.  In the second, you continue to look ahead, you engage the gray matter to come up with a solution and you barely skip a step.

Instead of focusing on why you cannot do something, focus instead on how you can best get the thing done.  It involves catching yourself if you start to go down the "woe is me" road, and reframing the response to a more productive result.

You're in charge of how you react to life's surprises.  Make "How can I…" the first question you ask yourself.
